SEO, AEO, GEO: what's the difference? When customers ask ChatGPT, will it mention you?
Ranking on Google used to be enough. Now AI needs to know you too? SEO, AEO and GEO explained in 3 minutes.

Three acronyms, one quick read:
- 🔍 SEO: helps customers find you in Google search results.
- 💬 AEO: helps your content become the direct answer to someone’s question.
- 🤖 GEO: improves the chance that AI search tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite or recommend your brand.
1. SEO: make sure Google can find you
Say you run a coffee shop in Malaysia.
A customer who wants coffee might search:
“Best Coffee Shop in Penang”
If your website has clear content, loads fast and shows reliable business details, you have a better chance of appearing in those results.
That is SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

But remember: launching a website doesn’t put you at #1 on Google.
2. AEO: answer the customer’s question directly
People no longer just type keywords. They ask full questions.
For example:
“How much does it cost to open a café in Malaysia?”
If your website has an article that clearly explains rent, equipment, renovation and running costs, search and answer engines can more easily pull useful information from it to answer that person.
That is the core idea of AEO (Answer Engine Optimization).

The point isn’t stuffing keywords. It’s actually answering the question.
3. GEO: help AI get to know your brand
Imagine someone opens ChatGPT and types:
“Recommend a few companies in Malaysia that offer AI customer service.”
Of course you want your company on that list.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means using useful content, real case studies, clear brand information and trusted outside sources to raise the chance that generative AI search finds and cites your brand.

A word of caution: GEO can’t guarantee that AI will recommend you, and nobody can sell you a fixed spot.
4. Which should a small business do first?
The answer: get SEO right first, then build up AEO and GEO over time.
You don’t need three separate websites for three acronyms.

Start with these:
- Make sure Google can crawl your website.
- Say clearly what you offer, who it’s for and what it costs.
- Answer the questions customers really ask.
- Show real projects, customer reviews and information people can check.
SEO, AEO and GEO share one goal:
When customers need what you offer, make it easy for them to find you and trust you.
Final thoughts
When building a website, we used to ask: “How do I get Google to find me?”
Now there’s one more question:
“When a customer asks AI for advice, can it find reliable information about me?”
The way people search is changing. Good content, real value and customer trust are still the foundation.
